Boxing for Beginners: Your First Month at a Bankstown Boxing Gym

Boxing22 June 20266 min readRSA Coaching Team

Walking into a boxing gym for the first time is intimidating for almost everyone. The good news? At Relentless Striking Academy in Milperra — just minutes from Bankstown — the vast majority of our members started exactly where you are now: zero experience, a few nerves, and a quiet hope that they wouldn't embarrass themselves. A month later, most can't imagine their week without training.

Here's an honest walk-through of what your first month actually looks like, so you know what you're signing up for.

Week 1: Stance, footwork and your first jab

You won't be thrown into sparring on day one — not even close. Your first sessions are about the fundamentals: how to stand, how to move, how to make a fist properly and throw a clean jab. It feels awkward at first, and that's completely normal. Every fighter you've ever admired was clumsy in week one too.

Expect to sweat, expect to laugh at yourself, and expect a coach to be right there correcting your technique. We coach for your level, so you're never left guessing.

Week 2–3: Combinations and conditioning

Once the jab feels natural, you'll start stringing punches together — the classic one-two, then hooks and body shots. This is where boxing gets addictive. You'll also notice the conditioning: boxing is one of the best full-body workouts on the planet, and your fitness, coordination and core strength climb fast.

Around this point most beginners realise they're not just learning to fight — they're getting into the best shape of their lives, and having fun doing it.

Week 4: Pads, confidence and community

By your fourth week you'll be hitting the pads with a coach or partner, putting your combinations together with real timing and power. It's a milestone moment — the first time it genuinely feels like boxing. You'll also have started to feel part of the crew. The community is the part members talk about most: no egos, no intimidation, just people pushing and backing each other.

What you need to bring

For your first class, just comfortable workout clothes, a water bottle and a towel. We can lend you gloves to get started, so there's no need to buy gear before you know you love it. Turn up ten minutes early and a coach will look after you from the door.
